What Do Homeowners Regret Most After a Shower Remodel?
The five most common regrets homeowners have after a shower remodel are: (1) choosing the cheapest bid, (2) not understanding what was behind the walls, (3) picking high-maintenance finishes like tile and grout, (4) focusing on the surface instead of the structure, and (5) assuming all contractors build the same way. Every one of these regrets shows up when we tear out failed showers across San Diego County.

We see it every week.
A homeowner calls us because their shower — the one they paid someone to remodel a few years ago — is failing. Mold behind the walls. Water damage spreading into the framing. A full tear-out.
Every time, the story is the same. And the regrets are the same.
Regret #1: Choosing the Cheapest Bid
It makes sense at the time. You get three quotes, two are close, one is significantly cheaper. So you go with the low bid. The problem is the cheapest bid usually means something was skipped — and the things that get skipped are always the things you can’t see.
Regret #2: Not Understanding What Was Behind the Walls
Most homeowners have no idea what’s behind their shower walls. They don’t know if there’s waterproofing. They don’t know if the framing is solid. They trusted someone to build it right and never had a reason to question it — until the problems started.
Regret #3: Picking Finishes That Create Maintenance Problems
Tile and grout look great on day one. Fast forward a year or two: grout starts discoloring, soap scum builds up, and cleaning takes longer and longer. That’s why so many people come to us saying “I just want something easier to deal with.”
Regret #4: Focusing on the Surface, Not What’s Behind It
Most homeowners choose based on what they can see: tile vs panels, color, style. But the failures we deal with almost never start on the surface. They start behind it — no waterproofing, poor drainage, movement in the walls, bad sealing around fixtures.
Regret #5: Assuming All Contractors Build the Same Way
On the surface, a lot of proposals look similar. But how the shower is actually built can be completely different. Some build to minimum code, some skip steps you’ll never see, some rely on caulk and grout to do jobs they were never meant to do. Unless you know what to look for, it’s hard to tell the difference upfront.

How Do You Avoid These Regrets?
Every one of these regrets has the same fix: do it once, do it right, don’t look at it again.
That means building around what still works 10–20 years from now — not what looks good on day one. Waterproofing first. Drainage engineered correctly. Structure that doesn’t move. Finishes that don’t create maintenance problems.
Frequently asked questions
Choosing a contractor based on price alone. The cheapest bid often means corners are cut behind the walls. These shortcuts typically lead to water damage and full tear-outs within 5–10 years.
No. Tile is a surface finish, not a waterproofing material. Water penetrates through grout over time. A dedicated waterproof membrane behind the tile is required.
Ask about waterproofing: what system they install behind the tile or panels. Ask if they tear down to the studs. Ask about warranties — both labor and manufacturer. A contractor who builds properly will explain their process clearly.
Focus on what’s behind the walls, not just the surface. Ensure your contractor installs proper waterproofing, correct drainage, and addresses ventilation. Look for manufacturer warranties on materials, not just labor guarantees.
