Code Is the Floor. Crafted to Zero Is the Ceiling.

The materials we refuse to build with, and why "code-approved" was never our standard.

Most homeowners assume every bathroom gets built the same way. It doesn't.

The difference isn't the tile you see. It's what sits behind the wall, where you'll never look again. That's where we make our decisions. And that's where we say no to materials most companies say yes to.

Here's what doesn't make the cut, and why.

After - Master Bath Shower Stall Jacuzzi

Moisture-Resistant Gypsum Board

This one surprises people.

A lot of boards get marketed as "water resistant." Sounds good on paper. But most of them are still built around a gypsum core with a treated face. They're designed to handle the occasional splash. They were never designed to be the main structural piece in a room that stays wet.

Once water finds a way past a seam, a fastener, or an accessory, that core can start to break down over time. That's not the kind of backup we're willing to build on.

Water resistant is not the same thing as waterproof. Not close.

In a Crafted to Zero bathroom, the waterproofing layer protects the structure. Not the board. The board is never the last line of defense.

Accessible Showers

Waterproofing That Leans on Perfect Caulk

Caulk is maintenance. It is not waterproofing.

Every sealant on earth ages out eventually. That's not an insult to caulk, it's just physics. If your shower is counting on caulk to never crack, never shrink, and never fail, then it isn't really a waterproof system. It's a hope.

We put the waterproofing behind the finished surfaces. So when a maintenance item eventually needs replacing, and it will, the structure stays protected the entire time.

Systems Packed With Penetrations

Every screw is a hole. Every hole is a possible leak path.

Modern bathroom with a white vanity, black countertop, and silver faucets. A glass shower is adjacent, with a towel rack and lush greenery for decor.

The more penetrations a system needs, the more chances you create for a failure down the road if each one isn't sealed into the waterproofing correctly.

Crafted to Zero cuts out the penetrations we don't need, and seals every one we do. On purpose. As part of a documented system, not a guess.

Products With No Real Manufacturer Warranty

If the only thing standing behind a critical part is the installer, the homeowner is carrying risk they never agreed to.

We'd rather trust products backed by established manufacturers with long-term warranty programs. That's part of the reason every Crafted to Zero Certified project comes with two manufacturer-backed lifetime warranties built into the system. It's the same promise we've always made our homeowners, put in writing.

We Don't Build Around Hope

A lot of systems quietly assume everything goes perfectly. Perfect install. Perfect maintenance. Perfect homeowner. Perfect caulk. Perfect conditions, forever.

Real life doesn't work like that.

Bathrooms move. Homes settle. Families actually use these rooms. Kids splash water everywhere. Sealants age. Steam builds up day after day.

We build for all of that from day one. Not for a lab. For your house.

"But It's Approved by Code, Why Not Use It?"

We hear this one a lot, usually about moisture-resistant gypsum board.

The answer is simple.

Code sets the minimum you're legally allowed to build. Our standard is set by how the bathroom performs ten and twenty years later.

There's a real difference between a product that's legal to install and a product we're willing to trust behind every shower we build. We don't reject materials because they fail code. We reject them because they don't meet ours.

Those are two very different conversations.

The Bottom Line

Every decision inside Crafted to Zero runs through one question:

Does this remove a future failure point?

If the answer isn't an immediate yes, we don't use it. Because homeowners aren't buying a pile of materials. They're trusting us to protect one of the wettest, hardest-working rooms in their home for decades. That's a responsibility we take seriously.

Code is the floor. Crafted to Zero is the ceiling.

My wife and I got one of our bathrooms done a couple weeks ago and are extremely pleased with the result. I recently had my bathroom remodeled by California Bathrooms, and I’m extremely happy with how everything turned out. Johnathan, their design consultant, guided me through the entire process and made it seamless from start to finish with his clear communication and support. I’m genuinely grateful for him and the dedication he brings to his work. I highly recommend California Bathrooms and Johnathan to anyone considering a remodel—absolutely worth the investment.

Alessandro

Really impressed with how professional and helpful this experience has been from start to finish. Johnny came out to get me my estimate and they ended up being the most competitive company from price and quality out of 4 quotes I received. I decided to give them a try and couldn’t be happier. My remodel turned out better than I expected and I couldn’t recommend this company enough. I’d leave 6 stars if I could.

Broc

We recently had our parents’ bathroom remodeled, and we’re very pleased with the results. The team added a secure bench & handlebars in the shower and made the entire space safer and more user-friendly for my elderly parents. Aldo was professional, knowledgeable, and attentive to every detail. The bathroom is exactly what we hoped for, and we highly recommend California Bathrooms for their quality and care.

Jendark R

California Bathrooms was the BEST! My wife and I shopped several other companies before choosing them and we’re so happy we did. They understood our vision and delivered on budget and on time. I would highly recommend.
