How Much Does a Shower Remodel Cost in San Diego?

A shower remodel in San Diego costs $10,000–$40,000+ in 2026, depending on the scope of work, finishes, and whether you’re converting a tub to a walk-in shower. A basic remove-and-replace with full waterproofing runs $10,000–$15,000. A tub-to-shower conversion with design upgrades runs $15,000–$22,000. A full bathroom build-out with custom features runs $22,000–$40,000+. All three tiers include complete tear-down to studs, structural inspection, and HydroBlok waterproofing — the part that determines whether your shower lasts 5 years or 25. eliminate a specific failure point — reducing callbacks, water damage, and long-term maintenance to zero. The system was developed after years of tearing out showers that failed because one or more of these layers was skipped or done incorrectly.

Straight talk from a local remodeler who believes you deserve real numbers. Not a sales pitch.

Modern bathroom with marble shower, glass doors, and black fixtures. Wooden vanity with twin sinks, large mirror, bench seating, neutral tones.

We get this question every single day. And you deserve a straight answer before you ever pick up the phone.

Most remodeling companies want you to “call for a quote” before they’ll share a single number. We get why. Every bathroom is different. But that doesn’t mean we can’t give you a real starting point so you can plan, budget, and decide if this is the right time.

Stylish bathroom with gray walls, hexagonal tiled shower, and vintage gray vanity. Features a potted plant, light wood floors, and ample natural light.

What Does “Remove and Replace” Mean?

We’re a remove-and-replace remodeling company. That means we take out the old tub or shower completely, strip the wet area down to the studs, inspect the framing and subfloor, waterproof everything properly, and install brand new materials from the ground up.

We generally keep the same footprint or work within a few inches of it. So we’re not tearing into adjacent rooms or relocating plumbing lines across the house.

What Are the Three Investment Tiers for a Shower Remodel in San Diego?

Tier 1: The Fresh Start

$10,000 to $15,000

The Fresh Start is a complete tub replacement or shower update starting at $10,000. Every project includes full tear-down to studs, structural inspection, HydroBlok waterproofing, new High-Tech Polymer wall surrounds with lifetime warranty, new shower base or tub, updated fixtures, and ventilation assessment. Most projects complete in 1–2 days.

This is the essential tub replacement or shower update. We’re not covering up problems. We’re solving them.

Everything comes down to the studs. We inspect what’s behind your walls. Restore the structural integrity of the wet area. And build it back the right way.

What’s typically included:

✓ Complete tear-down to studs with full inspection of framing, moisture barriers, and subfloor
✓ Structural repairs and durability restoration as needed
✓ HydroBlok waterproofing system behind every surface
✓ New High-Tech Polymer wall surrounds in your choice of pattern and color
✓ No grout. No sealing. Lifetime warranty
✓ New shower base or tub replacement
✓ Updated fixtures (showerhead, handle, trim)
✓ Ventilation assessment and recommendations
✓ Professional installation, usually 1–2 days after prep

Who this is for:

Your shower or tub works, but you know something’s not right. Maybe the grout is cracking. Maybe there’s discoloration you can’t clean. Or maybe you just don’t trust what’s behind those walls anymore. You want durability restored, a clean fresh look, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing the job was done right.

Tier 2: The Transformation

$15,000 to $22,000

The Transformation is a significant design and functionality upgrade starting at $15,000. It includes everything in The Fresh Start plus tub-to-shower conversion, aesthetic upgrades, High-Tech Polymer or PuroStone finishes, barn shower door or enclosure, upgraded showerhead systems, built-in niches and bench seating, and premium accessibility features. Most projects complete in 2–4 days.

This is where your bathroom starts to feel like a completely different room.

We’re still going down to studs. Still delivering full Crafted to Zero™ protection. But now we’re also making significant design and functionality upgrades that change the way the space looks and lives.

Additional features at this tier:

✓ Tub-to-shower conversion (removing the tub, building a walk-in shower in its place)
✓ Significant aesthetic upgrades: modern, coastal, organic, warm contemporary, or transitional design
✓ High-Tech Polymer walls or PuroStone engineered stone finishes
✓ Barn shower door or enclosure
✓ Upgraded showerhead systems (rain head, handheld combo, slide bars)
✓ Built-in recessed niches, corner shelves, or bench seating
✓ Premium safety and accessibility features: grab bars, slip-resistant flooring, ADA-compliant options

Who this is for:

You’re thinking long-term. Maybe you want a walk-in shower for safety and accessibility. Maybe you’re tired of climbing over a tub you never use. Maybe you want that warm coastal look you keep seeing in well-done San Diego homes.

This tier is where we see the biggest smile on reveal day.

Tier 3: The Crafted Suite

$22,000 to $40,000+

The Crafted Suite is a full bathroom build-out starting at $22,000. It includes everything in The Transformation plus custom-built shower pans, oversized soaker tubs, vanity cabinets and built-in storage, smart space planning, premium PuroStone finishes, frameless glass enclosures, LED lighting, smart home integration, and full California Title 24 energy code compliance. Projects typically take 4–7 days.

Additional features at this tier:

This is the full bathroom build-out. We’re not just doing the shower. We’re rethinking how the entire room works within the same footprint.

Custom shower pans. Oversized soaker tubs. Cabinetry. Smart design decisions that make small San Diego bathrooms feel significantly bigger without moving walls.

Who this is for:

You’re building your forever bathroom. This is for the homeowner who looks at their 5×8 bathroom in Clairemont or Tierrasanta and says “there has to be a better way to use this space.” There is.

What Makes a Shower Remodel Cost More or Less?

Three factors drive where your project lands within these ranges:

Scope of Work

What brings cost down: Keeping the existing layout. If your plumbing stays where it is, the job is faster, simpler, and more affordable.

What brings cost up: Converting a tub to a shower. Adding a custom shower pan or soaker tub. Upgrading cabinetry. Going beyond the wet area into the full bathroom.

Material and Finish Selection

What brings cost down: High-Tech Polymer walls in standard patterns.

What brings cost up: PuroStone engineered stone finishes, frameless glass enclosures, premium fixtures, and LED lighting.

Accessibility and Code Requirements

What brings cost down: Standard installation with no ADA modifications.

What brings cost up: Barrier-free entry, grab bars, ADA-compliant controls, fold-down seats, and Title 24 energy code compliance.

Elegant bathroom with a white tub and sink, wooden floor, and warm lighting. Greenery and framed art add a cozy, inviting feel.

Yes. We work with financing partners to offer monthly payment options. Ask about current terms during your free in-home consultation.

Ask specifically: “What waterproofing system do you install behind the tile or panels?” and “Do you tear down to the studs and inspect the framing?” If the answer is vague, that’s a red flag.

Because we tear down to the studs, install proper waterproofing, and use grout-free wall systems with lifetime warranties.

Really impressed with how professional and helpful this experience has been from start to finish. Johnny came out to get me my estimate and they ended up being the most competitive company from price and quality out of 4 quotes I received. I decided to give them a try and couldn’t be happier. My remodel turned out better than I expected and I couldn’t recommend this company enough. I’d leave 6 stars if I could.

We recently had our parents’ bathroom remodeled, and we’re very pleased with the results. The team added a secure bench & handlebars in the shower and made the entire space safer and more user-friendly for my elderly parents. Aldo was professional, knowledgeable, and attentive to every detail. The bathroom is exactly what we hoped for, and we highly recommend California Bathrooms for their quality and care.
